Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. SATURDAY, January 2

Ephesians 4:1-16. I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the Spirit in the bond of peace.

At General Convention 2006, the Diocese of Southern Ohio distributed purple wristbands with Ephesians 4:1-3, printed above, stamped on them. For months, I wore my wristband, feeling its message daily branded into my soul. There are more days than I can count, living as a missionary overseas, when I struggle for gentleness, cram my ego back into place, seek a deeper humility so as to bear with others. I have to remind myself that they have to bear with me as well.

To lead a life worthy of the calling to which I have been called means remembering that others have been called as well.

Then one day, a friend here asked me for my bracelet. He loved Paul's words and felt the need of a daily reminder, as I had. Now he wears it without fail, its message being branded into his soul.

Together, we are both trying to be worthy of our calling.

Written by Mike Kurtz,

Thank you, Sister, for helping us focus on St. Paul's admonition--perfect words for us to launch a new year and to challenge us toward pure thoughts in whatever difficult circumstances to which we have been called. I, too, am a "prisoner in the Lord," albeit mostly at home--caring for my mother-in-law, age 91, with dementia, while her daughter, my wife, remains employed outside the home. These daily meditations have contributed to the fortification of my spirit for years.

Written by Robert Lebby,

I appreciate this morning's reading in Ephesians. It is very timely for me personally.

Also, as I am forever running ahead of the Lord and trying to do things under my own strength, here's another verse, from Psalm 27:14 (NIV), that I need to have branded on my soul (and the back of my right hand):
Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

Written by Lauren Stanley,

No matter how well we know the Scriptures, no matter how hard we try to follow and be worthy of our calling, we need to be reminded of those Scriptures and that calling. Sometimes, it takes something as simple as a wristband does the trick. Or a pocket cross. Or a cross on a necklace ... anything that helps me focus is welcomed.
