Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 20. Grant you your heart's desire and prosper all your plans.
So long had my heart yearned to live in the country that this gift was hard to believe. Along with five acres, the size of my house doubled and we were able to make improvements to last our lifetime. I asked God to keep me ever mindful that this gift would serve his people in some way.
First of the people to be served would be myself, for within days of our move, long months of trouble began. A new boss injected our office with turmoil. Two dear friends died unexpectedly. Issues in a program I direct for the church caused me to make tough decisions that some were very vocal about not liking.
Through this time, I geared up while driving the winding road toward my job in town and then relaxed again while following it back out to my quiet place.
"May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble." Thus begins this psalm. So often in life I have skipped to the part about my heart's desire, forgetting that he first answers me and sends me help from his holy place. Thank you, God, for answering me when I called.
