Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 138. I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing your praise.
“All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee,” a celebrant might say while lifting the collection plate and then the bread and wine. As citizens of a realm give tribute to their king, grateful for protection and prosperity, so in gratitude for what God has given, the congregation gives a portion back to God. This is our sacrifice of thanksgiving.
In addition to offering the Lord the elements of bread and wine and money, we offer our attitude. Billboards pressure us to seek items we don’t have; the psalms remind us that a relationship with God is the most valuable possession. Instead of long lists of what we would like, why not keep a list of reasons for gratitude?
For Christmas I received a journal, and every night I list prayer requests and thanksgivings. In the latter I see answers to prayer I would not have noticed. I let go of nagging for what I want, the way I want it, and watch how God brings about healing and prosperity in ways I would not have considered.
Thank you, Lord.
