Psalm 27. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The image of light reverberates in the Bible. “Let there be light,” begins Genesis (1:3). John calls Jesus the light in John 3:19. “You are the light of the world,” Jesus tells believers in Matthew 5:14. Paul describes his conversion in Acts 26:12-13: “At midday along the road, your Excellency, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions.” At the end time, Revelation 21:23 prophesies that the city will not need “sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
Without the light of the Lord, Psalm 107 portrays the rebellious sitting “in darkness and deep gloom, bound fast in misery and iron.”
I feel the shining presence of our Creator when I walk my dogs early in the morning and notice the breaking of day, during a sunset on the Gulf of Mexico after a violent storm, while watching sunlight pour through the stained glass window onto the altar. Sensing this presence gives me the confidence to agree with the psalm that “though war should rise up against me, yet will I put my trust in him.”
