Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Acts: 7:30-43. Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared [to Moses] in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush.
Do you ever feel that God is silent? After forty years had passed, God spoke to Moses, the patriarch of Israel. At the time, Moses was eighty.
Forty years! The first twenty years of life pass so slowly. At twenty, thirty looks far off and ancient. But looking backwards is another thing. Forty years ago I was a young wife and mother, and that was only yesterday.
For ten years I was estranged by new sobriety from an old friend. After my husband died she was quick to call and we picked up our friendship where we had left off.
For twenty-five years God didn't hear from me. When he finally did he was right there waiting, without attitude or grudge.
How long has it been since you heard from God? However long it's been, it is not because God has forgotten you. God has a plan for your life and (unless you hear differently from a burning bush) that plan is that you be yourself, the beloved child whom he created, an indispensable child of his kingdom.
