SATURDAY, June 4

Luke 9:37-50. They were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Sometimes it is important to notice what scripture  does not say. Notice that today we are not told that  the disciples were hard-hearted or of little faith. We are told that they were afraid to ask Jesus to explain his words. They left that place confused and afraid. But which comes first, confusion or fear? It is difficult to answer because one feeds the other.

What are these men fearing? Are they afraid to  really know what Jesus means? Are they afraid of disappointing Jesus by their lack of understanding? Are they afraid of losing their fragile pride as confidants of  Jesus and fledgling leaders of this budding community  of faith? Again, none of this is noted in the passage. We are only told of their fear, their fear of asking  questions.

What of our fears to wonder and question and explore? What keeps us from asking questions about God, God’s word, and our beliefs? As I remind myself and others frequently, it is better to have a few good questions than all the answers.

Written by Tim Holsonback,

I remember when I reflect on this thought. God, the Episcopalians say this about you; the Baptist, this; the Jews, something else; the Muslims, that. God, who are you?

Written by Sr. Angela,

I am also an author for Day By Day. This passage came up for me, too. A completely different verse jumped out at me for my meditation. It is interesting how the same passage can speak differently to different people, and at different times of our lives. The Bible speaks to us wherever we are on our nourney.
Ask, seek, knock

Written by Dee,

Jesus assures us we will get what we need when we ask seek and knock and the Holy Spirit leads us to all truth. Sometimes we are afraid of the truth and what we might have to give up in facing it, but God is always leading us to the best outcome.

Written by Walt,

The disciples nonresponse is one of fear of being viewed as stupid; a human character flaw. The only stupid question is the one that is not asked, but in a group setting the aforementioned is never remembered. The disciples should have asked - Master, we do not understand.

Written by Tom,

I remember clearly in seminary, in a New Testament class, the professor speaking about how poorly the disciples fair in the Gospels, They are frequently portrayed as failing to understand what is right in front of them. I have always found great comfort in this. If they stru*gled to understand, why are we surprised when we stru*gle as well?
