SATURDAY, June 5 (Boniface)

Psalm 55. For had it been an adversary who taunted me, then I could have borne it; or had it been an enemy who vaunted himself against me, then I could have hidden from him. But it was you, a man after my own heart, my companion, my own familiar friend.

I remember so clearly the time I discovered these lines in the psalms. It was nearly forty years ago, but I can remember just where I was sitting when I read them.

Suddenly, the person who wrote those words came alive as a real person, a person like me. I knew exactly how he felt, and I was sure he would understand how I felt. We both had known the devastation of "my own familiar friend" making fun of us, making us feel insignificant in order to make himself feel more important.

I wasn't alone any longer in my suffering. I had a companion who had been this way before me.

I don't remember whether I continued reading until I came to "Cast your burden upon the Lord, and he will sustain you." I hope that I did. (1993)

But I will call upon God, and the Lord will deliver me.

--Psalm 55

Written by Steve Doutt,

I have been thinking a lot about betrayal lately...how easy it is for me to decide to say something that hurts, or violates someone's trust in me.

Written by daniel,

must say that i have been betrayed, and i'm certain i have also been a betrayer myself - the hurt cuts both ways. i pray that i will continue to live in a better way, where my power to live and to love comes from Jesus in my life, knowing that my life has been changed forever by his love for me.

Written by Gaye Anne McWade,

Forgiveness is a necessary thing but trust requires deep storage in friendship accounts, just like finance. Betrayal empties it out quickly. Rebuilding takes hard work. Endurance and patience too. Repentance and real sorrow are tangible things, they should be honored. Jesus lives it all out through us in His victory over sin's worst griefs. We too can rise again!

Written by Ado,

I am in day seven of post-betrayal, didn't see it coming because he's my husband of 18 years and I've always thought he loves me more than his own life. I think he still does, as do I love him. The grief--I hate it when it comes over me. Anger--that's not me but now it is. Losing him would kill me. Keeping him is killing me too. I forgave him. I think the rest is harder. I know God loves me, I can tell. This is so hard, though.

Written by Sheri Christi,

We are usually in our own minds and feelings. It takes a lot of real spiritual development to think of others and put them first. Jesus was so amazing in that way! However, he didn't let people off the hook for bad behavior unless they repented. In an odd way, betrayal by our nearest and dearest teaches us that our true friend is God and that our relationship with God should always come first. Jesus was often in prayer and he always put God first. I pray we can all do the same.
