Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

SATURDAY, March 12

John 1:43-51. Come and see.

Here it is again, the same as yesterday—“Come and see.” This time it is Philip replying to Nathaniel’s possibly snide question, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” One can imagine Philip replying differ- ently to Nathaniel: “Don’t be prejudiced against people from little towns in the boondocks! Your snooty, educated, condescending attitude is disgusting.” That would surely have put Nathaniel on the defensive and erased any chance that he would agree to speak with Jesus. But Philip didn’t rebuke Nathaniel. He simply said, “Come and see”—get to know this man, weigh what you find, decide for yourself.

And so Nathaniel went and saw. What follows in the text is a snippet of a conversation between Jesus and Nathaniel. It is inconceivable that this brief exchange is all the talking they did. They must have talked at some length, hung out for awhile. Nathaniel got to know Jesus (Jesus already knew Nathaniel) and Nathaniel was won over. It all started with a simple “Come and see.”

We are not the primary evangelists; we merely introduce people to Jesus, and Jesus does the rest. Sometimes all it takes is a simple “Come and see.” Invite your neighbor to spend some time with Jesus.

Written by Steve Doutt,

"Come and See" is a very kind, and gentle response. It is a response full of respect. It is a response from someone who loves me.

It's so good that Nathanael didn't respond to "Come and see" with "I don't need to"!
