SATURDAY, March 13 (James Theodore Holly)
Mark 7:1-23. Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders?
This question, raised by the guardians of religious orthodoxy, highlights a growing tension between Jesus and the "Institution." His ministry was conditioned by compassion and an openness to the possibility that rules can change. He fully supported and observed the principles on which faith was based, but rejected the minutia of regulations which enslaved people. He was constantly dealing with the question of what must remain and what must be relinquished in the tradition.
We all tend to cling to what is familiar and fear the newness that invites change. A new prayer book, a different minister, or children whose values challenge ours can be painful catalysts for our faith.
Letting go is a vital part of growth in the natural world and in our spiritual quest, and grasping at the past can become a form of idolatry. Today's reading is an invitation to ponder the question:
What do I really need to retain from the past as I embrace the present and move toward the future? (1989)
