Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
2 Corinthians 4:13-18. So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day...because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
We may not like to think of it, but time is slowly taking its toll on us, and we cannot hold it at bay.
We attempt all sorts of ways of trying to keep young, and especially to look young. We struggle to defeat the years by artificial tricks which do some- times deceive our neighbors, occasionally even ourselves. But we don't really deceive ourselves: we know well enough what the truth is.
Yet here Saint Paul declares exultingly that he has found a way to defeat the years, that he has the secret of perpetual youth. The body gets older, but the spirit remains young. Time has no meaning, for he is not living in time. He has learned to live above it, to see beyond it. The eternal does not change, does not grow old, and Paul has found himself partaking of the eternal by constantly keeping his eyes on it.
This is, of course, the doctrine of the whole New Testament-eternal life in the midst of time. "Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live" (John 11:25). (1945)
