SATURDAY, May 15

Matthew 7:28-8:4. Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Authority is a concept that is often misunderstood and misused within the military, as well as outside of it. Some people assume that in the military, from the commanding officer on down, everyone is constantly being given orders which they must blindly obey.

The only time when immediate and unquestioned obedience to an order is essential is in the midst of battle or imminent danger, when a delayed response might endanger a sailor or other crew members. Otherwise, if officers rely solely upon the power given them to issue orders and do not earn the respect and loyalty of those they lead, they get at best only reluctant compliance.

In the church, canon law is written to help organize things. But as priests, if we must point to chapter and verse in the law to prove our point or enforce our authority, we have already lost our authority. Power is given by position, but authority can only be earned by winning the hearts and minds of those we lead. (1996)

Written by Mary kier,

I really like the last line. It is an aphorism that many in the world of business could use. He makes clear the differece between assigned power and earned respect, or authority.

Written by Andrea,

This meditation reminded me of the book Servant Leadership, by Robert Greenleaf. It helped me bring together my thoughts as a Christian and as someone who teaches at a top business school. I've recommended it to many future leaders. You're right, Mary, this kind of thinking could change the world if business leaders truly lived it, rather than just talking about it!

Written by Randy Haycock,

The word for authority in the Gospel is exousia, literally "out of being." Real authority in the military, or in the church, comes more from who we are rather than from what position we hold. Jesus amazed others because what he said perfectly resonated with who he was as revealed in what he did.

I agree with Randy. All my spiritual ideals find fulfillment in Jesus, so for me he has the authority of God by virtue of who he is.
