Ezekiel 36:22-27. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you.

One of the false assumptions operating in the world today, leaving wasted lives in its wake, is that if you can find the key, you can apply it to yourself and change yourself. Many people, captured by this assumption, wander from new thing to new thing, each promising to be the key that will bring some real change in character and behavior. One such person went through physical fitness, higher education, religion, sensitivity training, radical politics, and escapist novels. None of these effected any real change in his life. It is not true that a person can change himself.

Only God can change a person. Only God has the power to reach inside you and cleanse you of your guilt, heal you of the effects of others' sins, empower you to desire and obtain a whole new set of priorities and considerations, and behave consistently in an increasingly Christ-like manner. God is not reluctant to exercise this power, but he must be asked and believed, though not as thoroughly as one might think. God only needs the slimmest faith to move in and effortlessly to achieve the changes we have so arduously tried to accomplish. (1978)

Transformation

May 22, 2010 at 7:29 am

Written by Stephen Miller,

This inciteful entry really seems like transformation through God's grace. It's not the things we do don't mater. As a younger adult I tried all sorts of things that were good for me and try to continue all those self-improvement things, but in the end it is God's grace that gives peace, strength, courage and love. I love the song "what's so funny bout peace, love and understanding" by Elvis Costello. It reminds me of the seriousness of these gifts and the source.

Written by Steve Doutt,

Yes, Stephen, this meditation is insightful. I read it this morning and felt convicted by the words. They hurt because physical fitness, higher education, religion, sensitivity training, radical politics, and escapist novels are some of my favorite activities; and I strive to include God in all that I do. I try to remember to begin and end every activity with prayer. Sometimes when I'm running I pray and sing praises during the entire time. (Emphasis on the words "strive", "try", and "sometimes")

The argument as written in this meditation needs a little amplification. It is true that I can't change myself, that I need God's help; but, there is a key that can be found, shared or given. Jesus gave it to us. I can initiate the change. I must ask, I must believe, I must have faith.

P.S. Tonight is the eve of Pentecost, "White Sunday," a festival day when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit promised to each of us, by Jesus, to help us recognize that there is God in each one of us.
