SATURDAY, November 28 (Kamehameha and Emma)

1 Peter 4:7-19. Be hospitable to one another.

The last ramparts of human civility and decency could crumble down today. Temporarily, anyway. The mad dash of yesterday's Black Friday sales continues today, and "mall rage" will be everywhere. I will stay away.

I do love this time of year despite the crass consumerism and inhospitable behavior of some. And seeing that today is the commemoration of the Hawaiian rulers Kamehameha and Emma reminds me of a place on the planet far more relaxed and hospitable than the frigid Midwest.
Of more significance is the life and witness of King Kamehameha and Queen Emma. They did not lord it over anyone, but out of their deep concern cared for and loved their people. They invited the church to their island paradise and performed great acts of charity, establishing hospitals, schools, and churches. At the king's untimely death, Emma chose not to rule but to continue her charitable work.

Archbishop Longley of Canterbury, on meeting Emma, was struck by her keen mind. "But what excited my interest most was her almost saintly piety."

Remember to practice hospitality to everyone you encounter.
