Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Revelation 17:1-14. Come, I will show you the judgment of the great whore who is seated on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and with the wine of whose fornication the inhabitants of the earth have become drunk.
We’re deep into the innards of the Book of Revelation here, and the imagery is not for the faint of heart. The symbolic numbers, timelines, and geographical details suggest that the woman in this passage is the city of Rome. The Bible often uses the image of a prostitute to refer to unfaithful people. In the Old Testament it is usually Israel, but here it is the capital city of a Gentile empire.
Don’t try to identify these gory images with modern nations (you’d have to contort the text to make it fit such a reading). Ponder instead how tragic and destructive it is to align ourselves with “the beast” that seeks to set itself up in opposition to the “Lord of lords and King of kings.” Where today is the beast asserting itself? Where in your personal life? In the life of the church? In the political arena? By what signs is the beast identified for the imposter it is? By what signs is the King of kings recognized? Do you need to make a decision for one or the other?
