Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Jesus was outspoken against doing a commendable deed for self-elevation. He rebuked those who entertained wealthy friends in order to be entertained by them or to receive their support. Giving with a selfish purpose is not Christian; it may not even be giving. This is important in a day when much emphasis is put on “knowing the right people,” “having contacts,” and playing up to those who have “pull.” Have you ever done something because it was the right thing, even when you knew it would deny you a desired preferment?
Suggestion for prayer: Pray that God will implant within you a desire to do what is right, not just what is expedient. Pray that he will help you love everyone and that you avoid “using” people. (1972)
