Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 6:27-38. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Psychologists tell us that we don’t really understand the wishes of our own hearts. In our desire to justify and rationalize our behavior, we “sweep under the rug” or bury in our subconscious minds desires both good and bad that are too disturbing to be faced.
Maybe this is why we have turned the Golden Rule into a simple, narrow standard that is easier to live with than the uncompromising command to love our neighbor. It is easy to say, “I wish only that my neighbor would leave me alone, and therefore I will do the same to him.” Or “All I ask of my neighbor is what I give to her—decent courtesy and fair dealing in matters of business.”
But deep inside we want a whole lot more than that. We show it in our quick response to anyone who seems to care about us personally. A thousand polite relationships cannot take the place of one real friend. What we want is love, and if we are to follow Jesus Christ, this is what we are required to give. (1964)
Put Christian love in action with a gift to Forward Movement, so people unable to purchase it may receive Forward Day by Day and other devotional literature.
