Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Revelation 7:(4-8)9-17. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more.
For the churches in Asia, it must have been frightening to hear the prophecy of John, the writer of Revelation. The church was in the midst of persecution. Friends and family in some places had already been put to death because of their faith in Jesus. Perhaps those reading these words would be next. Who wouldn’t be frightened?
John tells these early Christians not to be afraid because resurrection and new life would be theirs, if not in this life, then in the life to come. And life with Jesus, both now and in eternity, was their goal. The same is true for us today.
Like John’s readers, we experience suffering and death in various ways. They are unavoidable. We suffer many deaths, not simply the physical one at the end of our lives on earth. We die to old ways, we die to old traditions, and parts of our bodies die as we age. Relationships die and jobs come to an end. The list is long.
But death is not the end. It is never the end. It is always the beginning of something new and something better. For them and for us there is resurrection. There is always resurrection.
