Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
SATURDAY, October 3
2 Kings 19:21-36. And you have said, "With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon; I felled its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses."
Rising costs for wheat flour make it difficult for the poor to afford bread. Some cultures have explored such products as potato rolls as a replacement.
Life seems a constant quest for something to feed and fill us. Living a good, moral, God-seeking life feeds us, but many feel that such a life costs too much. To participate in the kingdom of God requires moving such worldly ways as competition, materialism, and the drive for success far down the list and embracing instead love of God and neighbor.
And despite our fear that the bread of eternal life costs too much, no substitute can fill us. We say, "With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains," but our accomplishments leave us feeling empty. The hollow place within us cannot be filled by more things, relationships, money, status. The checkbook, the daybook, the resumé may be full, but the heart is empty. Only God--the bread of life--can fill us.
So does it matter what this bread costs?
