John 12:44-50. I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness.
Early in the morning, I rose to see Venus, the morning star, in the east. She shone with a reflected glory, in advance of a greater light soon to come.
Later that morning, I visited a family in grief. A mother and father had lost a son in the war. He was their youngest. His unit had been ambushed; he had been killed. He was gone, struck down in the prime of his life.
The young soldier’s father rose, too, on that Saturday morning. He wandered outside, as was his custom, and noticed the morning star in particular. While he prayed in his awkward and pained way, he was suddenly struck by something unexpected. Looking up at Venus, he heard the voice of his son: “I am here; I am here.”
When the deep sky is dark, lights shine for our comfort and strength. They are signs in the sky which reflect a greater glory. This greater glory shines even when our lives are at their lowest. If we look for them, we can steel ourselves to deal with whatever comes our way.
Give thanks today for a light that shines in your darkness. (2006)
