SATURDAY, September 24

Matthew 6:19-24. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Since the economic downturn or recession began in 2008, most Americans have had a keen concern about jobs, income, banks, home values, mortgage payments, investment value and other basic financial matters. Many hearts and minds have, quite reasonably, been on our treasure. Many Americans lost much. Getting by has been hard. Recouping losses has been and will be harder.

Jesus taught about storing treasure that lasts. This means at least having a clear sense of what is important and what is not.

Sadly, it is often when we’re in hardship that our priorities become clear.

Our priorities—what we believe to be truly important—are our treasure, and it is there that our hearts go. Our energy, our passion, our creativity, our efforts, our hard work, and our prayers pursue attaining and protecting our treasure.

Our treasure is that to which we give our lives. What is your treasure?

Struggle with treasure

Sep 24, 2011 at 8:04 am

Written by Chris,

I have found that treasure is anything or anyones that captures or distracts me from what's really important, my relationship with God and how He wants me to live. The struggle is important as it represents to me that I am constantly turning and or turning back, as I have been distracted from, to God. And as my journey in faith continues and grows, those times of being distracted and thereby being apart from God if only for an instant, become more noticeable and in some ways more painful. I am stronger in faith and my struggle becomes more intense as the Holy Spirit is noticeably within me more often. I hope this makes sense. Amen.
On Earthly Adventures a poem by S. Winters

Written by Sharon,

So if we have a desire to climb a mountain or sail a sea and we give up our home and family and friends to pursue our adventure saying to ourselves, “If I don’t go now, I may never go and I want to go”, what is the action to us. For if we believe in the resurrection and in eternity, then it doesn’t matter if we go now or not for it will be there for us to do or it will not be important to do; and if we don’t believe in the resurrection, then whether we do it or not, we will die and it won’t matter then if dead is dead…..And if we don’t believe in the resurrection, then why are we here on earth. If we are only here by chance, then nothing matters, not us or those we “love”, or those we hate or the things we have unless we believe that because we are here by chance, we should make the most of the pleasures we find in our treasures, as we can take none with us when we die.
So, grace and peace to us who believe. And faith, hope and love are our past, present and future.

Written by Steve Doutt,

I agree with everything that has been said by the writer and the comments. I would add that this may also be an instruction on how to train your heart. Put your treasure where you want your heart to go.
