Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
John 20:19-31. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
After driving a motor car all day, you are tired partly because so many pictures, so many things, come before you in a very short time. In twelve hours you see miles and miles of countryside, cities, people, gas stations, other cars. Then at night you arrive home and you are at peace. If you know when to stop, you don't get tired out. And you are ready to go on again tomorrow.
In the abundant life which Jesus promises, we have to stop from time to time. There is the daily grind of things to be done, people to be seen, and we want to do our best. We can go forward more effectively if we stop at intervals to refuel and rest. Progress in the path of Christ requires moments of recollection, when you sit still (or kneel) to study the map. You don't want to make a lot of unnecessary detours. Rest yourself in Christ's peace, and let him send you on again. He knows the right route.
Pray that into your parish or group the risen Christ may come with his peace, that these disciples may see the Lord and be glad. (1936)
