Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 12:32-40. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
What do we value most highly in our lives, not just in fine principle but in daily practice? Our creature comforts, or our immortal souls? Our morning prayers, or that first cup of coffee? Before saying “My prayers, of course!” look again. Confronted by a choice between spending this evening with a lonely soul in a rest home or relaxing in front of the television for your favorite program, which do you the more want to do? Where is your treasure? For there your heart, your enthusiasm, your pleasure, will be.
We all need an occasional audit and overhaul of our hearts’ treasures. If you are the sole exception, blessed are you. Do write a book and tell us how you do it. It will be a best seller. (1964)
How many things in life do people labor after which, when gotten, are as much real use to them as a staff and shoes to a corpse underground?
