John 1:1-18. In the beginning was the Word....And the word became flesh and lived among us...full of grace and truth.
Think of this famous passage as a picture that comes gradually into focus. It begins with the eternal divine Word, the power and the creativity of God before time was--immense, nebulous, beyond approach, and definitely out of focus (at least for us). Then the Word acts in the creation of the universe--we can begin to get our minds around that. And then (putting aside for now the seemingly strange insertions into this passage about John the Baptist), the Word (or light) enters the world--it's coming closer to us now; we discern its outlines. Then the Word comes to his own, to his own people--we begin to glimpse what God is doing and among whom he is doing it. And now, finally, the Word becomes flesh and dwells among us--right here, right now! Everything is now in focus--you can touch it, hear it, smell it!
Do you want to know God? Don't try to understand eternity and infinity and universality (you won't understand them). Consider this person, this man who is here with you and speaking to you now, full of grace and truth. What do you make of him? What does he make of you?
