Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
1 Corinthians 3:1-9. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food.…Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
A distinguished theologian was staying with us while we were serving in Fiji. He was confronted by our curious son. “What island do you come from?” asked our five-year-old, presuming everyone lived on a small island in the Pacific Ocean. The professor hesitated, then smiled, “It is called the United States of America.” The child’s understanding of the world would need to grow.
The Christians in Corinth needed to grow. Paul was patient with them, understanding this. Instead of reprimanding them for their jealousies and quarrels, he explained to them “We are God’s servants, working together.” He speaks of the Christian community as a building, the foundation of which is Jesus Christ.
Paul does not give up on the Corinthians. He sees their potential for growth. He realizes that they are like babies who progress from milk to solid food—and who will eventually understand.
We all need to grow in one way or another. Thanks be to God, who “gives the growth.”
