SUNDAY, February 14 Last Sunday after Epiphany

Luke 9:28-36(37-43). He said to them all, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily, and follow me."

An illustration from Kierkegaard: There was once a noble horse in the prime of its life. It was five years old, a thoroughbred, and filled with fire. A comfortable old cab driver, on hearing the horse was for sale, said, "I can't use that horse. He is too frisky, too strong; he'd pull my old carriage to pieces, and make me get a new one. I don't want that horse."

Eight years later the old cab driver saw the horse again, now a slow, easy-going hack. So the cab driver bought him, and the old horse fit perfectly with the old carriage. There was no need for the cab driver to change any of his comfortable ways.

That is a parable of the two kinds of Christianity in the world today. One is sleepy, easy-going, comfortable, and you won't have to change your life a bit if you come to it. It's a very "proper" thing, like going to the right school or having the right kind of silver on your table.

The other kind, the following of Christ, will mean a new carriage. You will have to get rid of prejudice, humbly serve your fellow men and women, and work for justice in your community.

This second kind, in contrast with the first, means that you give your life to Christ. (1943)

The familiar path

Written by jeff campbell,

To deny oneself is not so easy. Our human predicament is wrapped tightly with a lifetime of each of us being the center of attention...egos thrive on it. It is almost as if we have to unlearn our past in order to secure our future. We cannot follow a selfish path and at the same time be one with Christ. He made no bones about that. His message is clear, but sets the stage for our most difficult challenge...
