Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Mark 9:2-9. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.
The Transfiguration was a mystical phenomenon demonstrating the power of the Spirit and what our future destiny will be.
Many holy people have experienced the over-whelming strength of the Spirit. This is especially true of those saints we call mystics. The word mystic refers to something hidden. It means that these holy people lived the great power of the Spirit in the depths of their souls. Think of Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, and John of the Cross. In them the power of God appeared externally, in bodily phenomena such as raptures, ecstasies, sweat, and tears of blood. They also experienced luminosity, telepathy, and levitation, anticipating our future glorious condition.
These are only some examples, because what the Spirit of God can do cannot be expressed in words. It is wonderful and sublime, a foretaste of eternal life.
