Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 4:1-13. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,...was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.
Scripture tells us Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit during the wilderness experience. God had seen to it that Jesus was alive in a way he had never been before--healthy, filled with the Spirit, a new dimension of relationship developing and being revealed to him. He went into the desert whole and complete, in faithful obedience. And he went into that wilderness because he was led by the Spirit to go there--he was not banished, exiled, driven out. He went accompanied by God, led by God, filled by God.
We are never alone in our trips into the desert. We are filled with the Spirit ourselves and led by the Spirit. Accompanied, filled with love and God, we understand clearly that relationship with God is everything.
Next time you are led into the desert, or the first time, remember that you are filled with the Spirit and that the Spirit is leading you. The devil will talk on, but your spirit will listen and respond only to God. (1992)
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire And lighten with celestial fire.
