Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 131. I do not occupy myself with great matters, or with things that are too hard for me. But I still my soul and make it quiet, like a child upon its mother’s breast; my soul is quieted within me.
In a chapel of a seminary in Suva there is a wonderful altar. On the base of the altar is a carving of sinuous roots. Roots secretly and silently draw nourishment. Psalm 1 uses the metaphor of roots. Those who delight in God’s law are like trees with roots tapping into life-giving water. The psalm for today gives a different picture of receiving nourishment: “I still my soul and make it quiet, like a child upon its mother’s breast.”
Sunday can be a very busy day with the activities of church and family. Other days may be like that too. There is danger in becoming preoccupied with so many matters that we are distracted from being centered on the love of God.
I need time to allow myself to be nourished, time to still my soul, time to rest humbly with the God who nourishes me with Word and Sacrament.
