SUNDAY, February 6

Matthew 5:13-20. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Her name Clare means light. Sister Clare, a Tongan, served for many years in Fiji as a member of a religious order. Her generosity and warmth were well known. She lived a life of prayer. She headed a large children’s home which still cares for needy children from different ethnic groups. She was earthy and practical. Her gift on our wedding day was a pair of double sheets. She was recognized in the community by Christians and Hindus and Muslims and was greatly loved by many.

The story goes that when Sister Clare was dying, someone asked why she was smiling. “I am practicing smiling in my coffin” was her reply. Hers was a triumphant and life-giving faith. She was mourned by many in Fiji and beyond Fiji. Many today remember her with affection.

A retreat house Sister Clare helped establish is called the Light House. It is at the heart of Clare’s community. People like Clare shine in the world and help us rejoice in a great and wonderfully generous God.

Written by Steve Doutt,

This brought to mind one the hymns appointed for today, "This Little Light of Mine," an African American spiritual. It carries within the lyrics the reminder to be active, rather than passive; and, that the light comes from us, but it isn't ours, it was given to us to give to others.

Written by E. Linda Cushner,

If we ask God to show us ways to serve Him everyday and if we ask God for His will to be accomplished in our lives everyday, then the light cannot help but to shine from us as we go about our lives.
It does not matter what walk of life that we are in, the light will shine.
Many years ago, I worked as a teacher in a small, private school. The Headmaster was difficult, aggressive and even perhaps sometimes rude. During this time, I went through a very heart wrenching divorce but still continued to teach and encourage the students. One day in the coffee room she walked over to me and asked "What is it that is different about You?" I proceeded to tell her about my Christian walk. Eventually she turned her life over to Christ and became a devout Christian. Now the light shines from her.
