SUNDAY, January 1 The Holy Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Luke 2:15-21. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Today we remember Jesus’ circumcision and naming. Just a week after Christ’s birth, why set aside a day to celebrate his name?

In the Bible, a name is connected to the identity of a person. Jesus means “God saves.” Sarah laughed when she was told she would have a child, and so she named him Isaac, which means “he laughs.” Esau’s twin brother pulled at his heel as he was born and so he was named Jacob, which means “supplanter.”

Names in the Bible also change as individuals are given a new identity by God: Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Simon became Peter, Saul became Paul. As they explore questions of identity, teenagers sometimes change their names, often discarding a nickname in favor of the name given at birth.

Most of us are stuck with the names we have. But our identity in Christ keeps changing and growing. What might God be calling you to be in this new year? What might be your new name?

Beginnings

Jan 01, 2012 at 2:48 am

Written by A,

January1st marks the start of a calendar year but each new day, new hour, new minute provides a new chance to name ourselves as we are called to by God. This last week of 2011 was fraught with personal challenges that made this perspective almost ethereal. But tonight, at a warm and loving gathering, I was given a gift of peace and hope and love and heard God calling my name. May my faith deepen and may We all hear our names being called. Happy and blessed New Year.
Congratulations and Praise

male genital mutilation

Written by Steve Doutt,

It's time that we take a close look at male genital mutilation, recognize it for what it is and, along with female genital mutilation, move to stop it.

It's not necessary for salvation, and foreskins are not a disease.
Looking forward...

Written by M.,

I am thankful for all of these meditations, especially today's.
On December 15, the pastor at the church where I have served as
administrator for nearly eight years, told me my job had been
eliminated. I am 72 years of age and look forward to God's call
to me for a new name, a new beginning. May God continue to bless
us all.

M's Name Change

Written by emeline,

M, congratulation and thanksgiving that you were able to be employed well beyond our mandatory retirement age of 65 (The Bahamas). A new name is in the making for you. Let God reveal it to you. Whatever it is, accept it with love and gratitude!

I am approaching my 65th birthday (Feb., 5) and my mandatory retirement. Whatever God directs me to do, I will accept, including the new name.

Peace, love and blessings!
