Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Acts 10:34-43. God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses…He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead.
What is the church’s main business? We must not give a long string of complicated answers to that question.
Do not think of a building where people have the opportunity amidst seemly surroundings to worship God, to train their children, to enjoy fellowship, to serve as a Christian nucleus in a community. All that is good, but it does not come first.
A mighty wind blew on the church’s first Day of Pentecost. There was a fierceness, an intensity when the church struck the first blow of its main business. It was to herald the good news. To teach the saving faith. To win followers of the one and only Lord. To go out and out until the last person is reached.
If we want restored “the lost radiance of the Christian religion,” we shall find it only in a rekindled passion to make Christ known to a waiting and a dying world. Missions! (1947)
