Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Luke 11:1-13. If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
You want your child to "ask...seek...knock" when he comes to you. So, says Jesus, does your Father in heaven. Moreover, you want your child to spell out plainly to you what he wants. But do you not, sometimes, sit down with him to talk it over and ask if he really wants this or only thinks he does?
Of course you want to give good gifts to your child, but what is the good gift? He wants to play ball when you want him to do his arithmetic. Which will be the "good gift"--your permission to skip the homework and play ball, or your insistence that he do the lesson first?
This can be a problem for us, but it is never a problem for God. God doesn't need to debate with himself what the good gift is. When he sends it to you--whatever it is--it is the good gift. (1960)
