SUNDAY, July 3 3 Pentecost

Romans 7:15-25a. I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

Anyone who has ever been on a diet can identify with these words. If I decide to limit what I eat in order to lose weight, I become obsessed with when my next meal is and what I will cook. “I can will what is right, but I cannot do it.” For me, deciding to change what I eat is not enough to shed pounds because I end up fighting myself, wanting forbidden foods even more, and feeling cheated if I can’t have them. It takes more than willpower—I must be changed.

My most effective way to lose weight is to open myself to a different reality. I visualize and remind myself that I am a healthy, naturally thin person. As I image my altered self and send that message, I am transformed. My openness to changing into the person I was created to be results in fewer pounds and a healthier me.

The struggle to do what is good and right is similar. It can be helped by willpower but our minds alone are not strong enough to prevail. “Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” We need the power of Christ to see who we were created to be and to grow into that image.

It was written especially for me!

Jul 03, 2011 at 7:08 am

Written by Chris,

There are AHA times during a sermon, a bible study, discussions with friends about faith and God's Word, and especially in devotional messages as in this one this morning. This one was written especially for me! Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word, your message to me this morning, and for your messenger who wrote it. Help me and all those who are touched by your message this morning, see through the power of Jesus Christ who we are created to be and to grow in that image. In Jesus's name, Amen.
Thanks!

Written by Marco of San Francisco,

Thank you God for today's writer and to Chris for his comment. This writing was also directed to me! God, please help me be strong enough to see the image of myself I need to see and give me the strength and courage to work hard to become
that person. Amen.

Written by Noel of July Day by Day,

How do we see who we are created to be and growing into? I'm looking at my bulletin board, and I see pictures that are meaningful to me. I realize now that I put them there because they illustrate those qualities of who I am and want to be. They are my stained glass window.

Written by Steve Doutt,

Christ teaches us that simply knowing that something is happening brings us into the circle of responsibility. Along the same lines he teaches us that imagining something is the first step of doing it, whether good or evil.

I stru*gle with admitting that I originate sin. I'd like to blame others, or nature. I need help. Thank God there is a helper.
