Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

SUNDAY, July 31 7 Pentecost

Matthew 14:13-21. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled.

It all started when I saw a painting advertising an artist’s exhibition. The intense greens of the water lily leaves beckoned me in dreary February, even on a frigid evening. Arriving at the gallery, I saw a clergy friend who lives in the low-income neighborhood where I tutor in an after-school program. I told her about the children’s struggles to read and their lack of resources in school and at home and how I wanted to do something. She mentioned her involvement with a new reading camp for one week at our diocesan camp. “Only one week? What if we found the resources to do more?”

My friend has a background in teaching and special services. “God must want this program,” she said, and she quickly found excited tutors, donated curriculum, and volunteers. Together we found the money and devised the program. At her church the children are fed lunch and taught to overcome obstacles.

“And all ate and were filled.”

We take care of the children's physical and spiritual needs and teach them to be self-sufficient. More Saintly Volunteers are needed to execute God's plan to feed the hungry!

Yes, they are all Saintly, those who feed and clothe the needy and those who help
feed the souls of the needy. The need is always present. Thanks be to God to all who are able to help with time, talent and treasure.
