Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 104:25-35, 37b. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth.
A little known detail of Michelangelo’s Pieta is that Christ’s left foot rests on a small stump. Around the back of the sculpture the stump shows a few sprouting leaves. This is Michelangelo’s representation of the stump of Jesse, father of King David who is the attributed author of the psalms. Michelangelo subtly proclaims that God’s kingdom was rooted in King David and grows from the death and resurrection of Jesus.
I can imagine the early followers of Jesus in despair as our Lord’s body was laid in the arms of Mary. But God was not finished; death was no barrier. The Holy Spirit brought renewal to all believers, including to us today. On this Day of Pentecost, as we celebrate the invigorating and inspiring gift of the Holy Spirit, we are reminded that God is still not finished. The Spirit is continually sent forth to us.
