Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Matthew 28:16-20. …teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.
Someone pointed out to me that many Christians can quote the beginning of Jesus’ Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” But the person also observed that few can complete the next lines. They, perhaps conveniently, forget “and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”
Jesus is commonly identified as our Lord and Savior, but at times we rest in Jesus as Savior at the expense of the reality that he is Lord as well. As Christians we are not free agents; we are not without claims upon us. On Trinity Sunday, across the world the church will be baptizing many members into our faith. But our faith is not simply about being saved; it is also about being faithful. We are called to be disciples, learners, followers of Christ. We are called to a new life of both redemption and obedience. Jesus is both our Lord and our Savior.
Let us always glory in God’s gift of salvation; let us do so by obeying God.
