Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Philippians 2:5-11. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who...emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross.
God in Christ has come near to us.
The German theologians, under the pressure of persecution, have been rediscovering the gospel and speak in this same language. One of them, Emil Brunner, has expressed it in these words: "It pleased God in his mercy to throw a bridge across the chasm between himself and us, to blaze a trail where we ourselves could not go. It pleased God to visit us who cannot come to God."
Notice the language used--a bridge, a trail, a visit.
The gospel is a bridge thrown across the great gulf that divides God and humanity, God in his holiness and we in our sin.
The gospel is a trail blazed through the undiscovered wilderness.
The gospel is the visit paid by God to his people.
He has come across the eternities into time. "He has visited and redeemed his people" (Luke 1:68). He did not send. He came. God in Christ has come near to us. (1948)
