Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

SUNDAY, May 1 2 Easter

1 Peter 1:3-9. Although you have not seen him, you love him.

There is an element of pathos in what the writer of this first letter, ascribed to Simon Peter, said to his friends. Like us, they found themselves living in another generation than the eyewitnesses who were with Jesus during his life. They had never seen Jesus face to face, and neither have we.

Balancing this gentle tone of regret is a bold assertion of fidelity, a sense that Jesus was present to this group of new Christians as clearly and dramatically as he was to his first disciples and as clearly and dramatically as he is to us. That was the promise made during his earthly life, a promise that has been kept by the coming of the Holy Spirit among those who believe in and love Jesus—“for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” As he was present to these earliest Christian converts in Rome, so is he now to us in all his Easter glory, as we gather week by week to break bread in his name until his coming again.

Christ is in us, as God was in him: there is no difference in the act and fact of his oneness with us from that of God’s oneness with him—other than that which we place there by our want of faith in it.

Written by Marsy Conner,

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy the information such as this on St. Paul's website, especially when we are away. Father Stokes, Rev. Kathleen and Susan Stokes (and all the staff) makes it easy to love St Paul's; thereby, feeling such a connection to our Lord. Sometimes other than a Sunday, it is nice to go online and read meditations such as this. As we say in our household: "Father Stokes just doesn't miss a beat". For the above, Dan and I are truly in love with St Paul's and all of you!

Stay Blessed!
