Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Acts 16:16-34. But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities...they said, "These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe."
It was fine having Paul and Silas in town, preaching an interesting new religion--until they began to interfere with business. They healed this girl with the "spirit of divination" whose affliction was a money-maker for her masters. When religion starts meddling with something really
important, such as the making of money, then it appears that religion is getting out of hand.
Is this crude and inhuman idea entirely dead? It is still possible to use human beings as mere sources of financial gain to their users. It is possible, and it is done by many people in many ways. When any child of God is used as productive property by others, the Christian religion must move in, in the Name of Christ, and put a halt to it. Either it does that or it is not the Christian religion. (1962)
