SUNDAY, May 22 5 Easter

1 Peter 2:2-10. Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house.

I was in Delphi once, the ancient pagan holy site set  in one of the most dramatically beautiful landscapes in all of Greece. People flocked to Delphi to seek the riddling advice of the oracle in the Temple of Apollo and thought of the place as the center of the earth, the navel of the world. On the way up to the ruined temple, you pass a remarkable wall. It is built of  massive stones that have been squared off and polished, carted somehow up the hillside, and then fitted together without the use of mortar. The wall is covered with Greek inscriptions, carefully incised, singing the praises of kings and princes who had come to consult the oracle. It is as if the mute stones speak.

I doubt that the writer of the first epistle to Peter ever saw the stones of Delphi, but remembering them helps me understand why he called these new Christ-followers living stones, held together not by mortar and lime but by the power of the Holy Spirit, who inspired them to proclaim with confidence the good news of our salvation.

Written by Marcia,

I was dismayed to read the phrase "the writer of the first epistle to Peter". Is this a typo? Or a mistake (that is hard to dismiss since the author is a seminary prof)? Of course, the writer of that letter WAS Peter;
the letter was not written TO Peter...
