Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 25:1-9. All the paths of the LORD are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
And now we begin again. Advent Sunday calls us to repentance, to make ready for the coming of the Lord. Many of us will sing the Veni Emmanuel today. No matter the state of the world, this year we are likely to sing these words with more passion. If we have learned anything during this past decade, it is the tenuous nature of civilization and of life. God alone is our refuge and our strength.
It is a good time to invite and bring to church with you those who have no church home. Many are seeking God, and perhaps they are not even aware that God is what is missing in their life.
One of my favorite conversion stories is about the woman who was invited to church and had run out of excuses not to accompany her friend. Yet on hearing the words of the confession she was immediately overcome with a sense of having arrived home. Any church, she said, "which includes in its confession the line, ‘We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done,' is the church for me."
