Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.

SUNDAY, October 11 19 Pentecost

Amos 5:6-7, 10-15. Seek the LORD and live.

The city of Nahalal, a farming community established in Palestine in 1921, was laid out in concentric circles. Its founders envisioned community buildings--to be shared--at the center, with other resources and residences forming rings around that center.

Most cities--and most lives--cannot be laid out so neatly in advance. Our lives develop not according to a plan, but largely in reaction to the circumstances and people we encounter. Most of us say we would love to place God at the center of our lives, but our lives have already developed so unevenly that it seems impossible to find the center, much less put God there.

And yet, it still changes, deepens, and gives significance to life when, even in a moment, we "seek the Lord and live." In our flawed human development, the circle with God at the center seems a distant, even impossible, memory. But God asks only what we can give at the moment. With mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and--thanks to the incarnation--understanding of what it is to be human, God continues to invite us.

Every day, God invites us to the center and offers an opportunity to "seek the Lord and live."

Written by Marshal Cousins,

This reading truly speaks to me at this time. I just transferred my church membership to an Anglo Catholic parish because I was truly "seeking the Lord". This parish is truly "God" centered and the one I left was a very warm, welcoming social setting, not
so much "God" centered at all. I will miss all those at the parish I left, however, this new challenge, new journey...I welcome. Thanks be to God.

It is a very good place to be when God is the center of your life.
