Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
1 Thessalonians 1:1-10. Constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Is there anyone who does not love Paul’s famous ode to love in Chapter 13 of First Corinthians? Beautiful words, aren’t they? We could write equally wonderful words about the virtues of faith and hope. Many have.
Yet faith, hope and love, no matter how we define them, no matter what profound words we use to describe them, must be translated from word into action. Living our faith takes work, loving entails laboring, and hope demands that we keep a steady course amid changing times and perplexing events. Sometimes it seems that we spend more time defining our faith, explaining what love is all about, and trying to understand or predict the future, than we do in living out the realities of faith, hope, and love.
But it is only in the living that we truly understand. Apart from a life of faith, hope, and love, any understanding we attain will be empty words, not worth the effort needed to speak or write them, and our lives and our words will convey very different messages.
