SUNDAY, October 4 18 Pentecost

Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12. Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds.

A friend was distressed when his five-year-old daughter began tearing apart books. She explained that she liked the characters in the stories so much she wanted them to come out of the books and play.

When stories move us, we want them to come to life. We read of the love of God, but we begin to understand that love more deeply in the incarnation of Christ, God "coming out and playing" with us. Until we experience God's love in our own lives, we cannot know what unconditional love looks like.

The story of God comes to life in Jesus. When we want to give up in our human weakness, Jesus can plead for us, having been tempted himself. When we experience pain or fear death, we know that God understands, having lived in a human body, hoping that death would pass him by. This story moves us beyond the present, into eternity. It moves us toward God.
