SUNDAY, October 9

Isaiah 25:1-9. O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you, I will praise your name; for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.

We have all read stories about the so-called self-made man or self-made woman, that person who started with nothing and picked himself or herself up by the bootstraps to become a success in the world. We love to read these Horatio Alger stories and perhaps even revel in them.

They are wonderful stories. Some of them are even true. And they are many. They are also our story. Each of us can recount times when we have worked very hard on something that seemed impossible and made it a success. We were proud of what we accomplished and rightly so. We might even be role models for others.

Yet as proud as we may be for what we have accomplished, not to give our God some of the credit would be to overlook the fact that, were it not for God’s giving us the gifts, we could have accomplished nothing. We may tie the laces but God gives the boots.

Forward Movement is a self-sustaining, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church. Your prayers and generosity make our ministry possible.

Written by Mary kier,

Thanks for that wonderful phrase, " we tie the laces but God gives us the boots. I was talking to someone about boasting. It always gets on my nerves. I think some men do it to impress women ( natural instinct)? But there is definataely God missing in that equation. All of us have been heros in some stage of our lives when we face great loss, disease, loss of job. The difference being that at your darkest point you either rely on your faith, you find it or you rely on things othe than God, money, alcohol, drugs etc. If none of these things happen that person must come to the conclusion that it was all their own doing! Then humilty dissapears as well as gratitude and praise for God our maker.

Written by E.J.,

We all fit into the greater mosaic of God's plan. Some are meant to sway the whole world while others are meant to shine in a small but important corner. The important thing is to discern and submit to His plan for our lives. That is real fulfillment.

Written by emeline,

My light will shine more brightly when I do things that are pleasing to God, and when He alone is watching and sees all my deeds. No one has to know what I do for others because it is a covenanthev erticingt between myself and God. Whatever good is done for Christ will eventually shine because God will take care of all things. Let your light shine so that the good you do would please others in their own small way.
