SUNDAY, September 20 16 Pentecost

Mark 9:30-37. Whoever welcomes one such child...welcomes me.

Several months ago I saw a wonderful picture of Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, clad in a brightly colored chasuble and sitting on the floor in church, surrounded by children. Our presiding bishop travels extensively. She is so available that whenever she comes to a diocese, she tries to spend time with children and youth. When she comes to consecrate a new bishop, she asks to stay over Sunday and visit a small church. She strives to make the office of presiding bishop touch as many people as possible.

All too often when people are elected to high office, they lose touch with the "children"--both literal ones and figurative ones. How refreshing it is to see young children in the White House, and see our President and First Lady as mom and dad.

Jesus makes no bones about the fact that when we welcome children into our life, we welcome him. May we never be so busy that we lose touch with the children. For when we welcome them, we welcome Jesus.

Written by Rob,

I appreciate the sentiment of the writer and that Jesus wants us to welcome children, as well as come to him as children, but we should leave the political figures out of FDBD.

I am confused b/c FDBD made reference to previous presidents. Why the objection now?

Written by bugs-1,

Either you agree with the sentiment or you don't. I try to teach my children that if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything. I don't think the author was trying to impose an opinion, political or otherwise. We should be meditating on this passage, not dwelling on a perceived alterior motive.
Spiritual, not political
