Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
Psalm 78:1-4, 12-16. We will recount to generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the Lord, and the wonderful works he has done.
African American spirituals and gospel songs are powerful, passionate testimonies of faith, perseverance, and hope. They tell the Bible stories of human hardship and God’s deliverance.
When I was a child, my mother read Bible stories to my sisters and me most nights before we went to bed, and on Saturday mornings, we studied our Sunday School lessons as a family. I am blessed to have grown up learning the glorious deeds of the Lord.
There are many ways to tell the stories of God and God’s people. The important thing is to tell them to our children and to our children’s children. We are mistaken if we think we must always interpret them or explain them. The stories have their own power to inform, to enlighten, to exhort, to rebuke, to inspire, to encourage, and to energize.
These stories tell us our history and heritage. In them, we find our hope in the faithfulness of the Lord.
Read them. Remember them. Tell them.
