THURSDAY, April 8 Thursday in Easter Week

Luke 24:36b-48. In their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering.

As the disciples stood dumbfounded, Jesus did not deliver a theological discourse. Instead, he asked them a very human question, "Have you anything to eat?" How typical of Jesus this was! He was still their friend, sharing their life with them. He had always been like that, sharing the simple joys and problems of fishermen, living by a code of love that was simplicity itself, forgiving and healing without elaborate formulas, but with a simple "Go, and sin no more," or "Arise; you are whole."

That simple meal of broiled fish is a symbol of the simplicity of the Lord's Supper. The risen Lord is always present with his followers in the simple meal he has given us. He promises also to be with us whenever we think of him or talk of him or read of him. The symbolic evidence of that truth is his explanation to the disciples of the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. He spoke just after eating. These are the two simple and loving ways in which he has been present with his disciples down through the ages: in the Sacrament, the simple holy meal; and in the Word, the simple holy story of God's love. Written by Andrea,

What a wonderful meditation! I might add that there's a third way Jesus is and has been present "down through the ages," and that's in his people who act according to his teachings of love, by the grace of the Holy Spirit. May I see and serve the Christ in every person today, as well as encountering him in Scripture and communion!

I agree with you, Andrea. In fact, there may be many ways in which Christ is present to us. But Word and Sacrament stand out.

Written by Steve Doutt,

When I say the Prayer that Jesus taught me to pray, "Your Kingdom Come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven," I become aware that it can only happen if all soul's on Earth act according to His teachings of love. "Let that time be now Lord, but your will not mine."

What a marvelous statement! "In their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering." Disbelief and wonder so expresses what I feel as I experience His living presence in my life.
