Psalm 105:1-22. Search for the Lord and his strength; continually seek his face.
The psalms often give words that seep inside me, and when I read them another time I have the feeling of meeting an old friend. That was what happened when reading over the scripture passages for today. In 2 Samuel we’ve been following the saga of David and his rebellious son Absalom, and in Acts, the story of Paul being arrested in Jerusalem. Mark shows us Jesus teaching and preaching wisdom. I then turned to Psalm 105, which is mostly a recalling of God’s saving acts in the Exodus, and these familiar verses hit me with fresh intensity in a new context.
Paul, Christ, and perhaps David, would have known these words. They would have been inspired and challenged by them. In the context of the whole psalm these words are specifically related to remembering how God has reached into history to save God’s chosen people. In the midst of trials, they could recall to us what God had done. In remembering the past, we see God’s strength in the present.
We too can turn to the Lord, searching for God’s strength, and when faced with trials, look above the struggle of each day to the one who has saved and who continues to save.
