Forward Movement is an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living. Since 1935 we have published the quarterly devotional Forward Day by Day, as well as pamphlets, booklets, and books that encourage and nourish people in their lives of prayer and faith.
2 Peter 1:13-21. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.
August 6 has been celebrated as the feast of Jesus' Transfiguration for centuries in the Eastern Orthodox Church but only since the Reformation in the Roman Church. It did not appear in the Anglican calendar until the American Prayer Book of 1892. It gives to Jesus' disciples, then and now, a glimpse of his eternal glory before the agony of his Passion. It also affirms his true identity as God's Messiah. It is meant to sustain us as we bear our own crosses.
August 6 marks another observance as well, the destruction of Hiroshima by the first atomic bomb. That event could arguably be seen as the most important turning point in modern history. Its aftermath, the global race for weapons of mass destruction, has darkened our world and immeasurably sapped its resources.
Two visions: one of glory, light, and promise; the other of destruction, suffering, and violence. One meant to inspire, the other to terrify. Let us hold fast to the first as we endure the second.
